The experience takes place on the man-made canals of the Waterfront which go through Cape Towns prestigious hotels and accommodation. The views of the city and mountain from the canals are truly breathtaking. Take in tranquility and beauty of the city waterways passing by the One and Only villas and enjoying the sights and sounds of the Waterfront.

WHY WE LOVE THIS

Explore the ancient tunnels and dungeons of Cape Town

Discover the secret underground river

Learn about the unique history of the canals and tunnels

WHY IT’S AMAZING

During the early days of Cape Town canals and rivers acted as routes of travel and supplied the Company Gardens and ships with fresh water. Sadly, these canals and rivers became an unofficial waste disposal system which was covered up sometime during the late 19th century. Still in existence today though, these tunnels – approximately two meters in diameter – which are located under the busy streets of the CBD and now help with storm water drainage, channel fresh run-off water from Table Mountain (straight into the sea).

This journey through these underground tunnels and beneath the belly of the Mother City is accompanied by qualified guide and a professional rescue medic (just in case), and each explorer gets a permit and a hard hat. Explorers need to be physically fit and surefooted, as parts of the tunnels can be slippery and as there are obstacles to hurdle and ladders to climb. This  expedition is great for adults and kids over 8 years of age. Children need to be accompanied by an adult.

  • Challenge your hiking skills on the famous India Venster trail
  • Abseil down Table Mountain with Abseil Africa
  • Enjoy a picnic with a view of Cape Town

WHY IT’S AMAZING

Are you up for a challenge? Eco-explorer and mountaineer Kai Fitchen will take you on an ultimate Cape Town adventure. You will hike the legendary India Venster trail to the top of Table Mountain and enjoy breathtaking views of the Devil’s Peak, Cable Car and the ocean. From there you will abseil down the slope of the mountain under professional guidance of Abseil Africa team. The abseil is followed by a well-deserved picnic at a beautiful spot called Fountain Ledge with the views of the city. Kai will share his mountaineering experience, tell you the stories about his expeditions to Mount Elbrus, Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya and guide you all the way, from start to finish.

ABOUT THE GUIDE

Kai’s love for the Cape came from clambering up and down Table Mountain whenever he could. When he was 9 years old he was diagnosed with epilepsy. Hiking and climbing was the only thing which got him through it all. At the age of 15, he conquered Kilimanjaro on an expedition aimed to raise awareness about the disease. In 2010, Kai climbed Mt Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. On this adventure he was shocked by the amount of litter on the slopes. That’s why his next expedition Kape to Kenya was eco-conscious. It had to have a small carbon footprint so the team had to travel almost 14,000 kilometres from Cape Town to Mount Kenya and back again, by basic public transport (taxi, bus, bicycle and foot power) only. On his latest adventure Kape 2 Atacama, Kai crossed the Atlantic by boat and then, merely by bus and hitching rides, he managed to climb some of the most inspiring icy peaks the Andes has to offer. Now he is planning his next journey in the My Kape series of environmentally and socially responsible climbing expeditions.

WHY WE LOVE THIS

  • Get a skills course from the top marathon rider
  • Explore the beautiful wine lands by bike
  • Visit the historic wine farms in the Jonkershoek valley
  • Enjoy award-winning wines from Lanzerac, Starl-Condé and Bartinney farms

WHY IT’S AMAZING

This experience brings wine tasting and adventure cycling together. Guided by professional marathon rider Erik Kleinhans, you will cycle the hills of Cape Winelands and hop from one beautiful wine farm to another. Enjoy the views of picturesque Jonkershoek Valley, explore historical wine farms and get a first-hand experience of riding with a pro. Erik has won numerous races and is famous for his love for steep hills. The route is 18 kilometers long and includes some fun and sometimes challenging riding. However, all cycling levels are welcome.

On the way you will stop at the 300 years old Lanzerac Wine Estate for some wine & chocolate tasting and go on the historical cellar tour. The next rest stop is Starl-Condé farm located in the beautiful mountains. Here you will enjoy a lunch by the lake and of course a wine tasting. It’ll be a great moment to ask Erik about his cycling experience — he will be happy to share tips and stories.

After some more cycling on the beautiful trails you will arrive back to Stellenbosch for a well-deserved glass of wine with some olives at the trendy Bartinney Wine & Champagne bar.

ABOUT THE GUIDE

The list of Erik’s career highlights is incredibly long. He has won over 18 races, including the 2013 Argus MTB, 2011 Cape Pioneer Trek Mixed and Overall bridge Cape Pioneer Trek Men. Before he started mountain biking, Erik had been a road cyclist. Now, after completing 7 Cape Epic races, he is a member of RECM — the professional mountain biking team. Erik’s strength, in his own words, lies in cycling rolling terrain, while his weaknesses are long steep climbs and his wife and in-line Epic partner, Ariane. The couple is based in Stellenbosch where they train and coach. Erik knows the routes around Cape wine lands like the palm of his own hand. Specially for Gummie, he will be taking a group of avid cyclists on a mountain biking adventure.
